An abstract artwork designed to complement a neighborhood's energy

By now you might have seen the bright Petworth mural in the alley next to Willow, Help-U-Sell and Petworth Citizen on Upshur Street. The mural was the brain child of Petworth residents Tom Pipkin and Rob Mandle. Tom and Rob wanted to add a little artwork and color to the neighborhood that would reflect and complement the community's energy, vibrance and sense of connection.

Both are very active residents in DC and in Petworth in particular... Read more after the break:

Lemonade Social celebrates neighbors and new stop signs

The Southwest Petworth Lemonade Social was tonight at the triangular park between Quincy, Kansas and 13th Street. A nice turnout, lots of new faces.

Everyone enjoyed the new stop signs at Quincy Street. smile emoticon

It was nice to see ANC 4C commissioners Joe Martin and Zach Teutsch out with the neighbors, along with Khalil Thompson from the Mayor's office.

Feel free to tag yourself in the photos on Facebook:

Largest Grant Circle Social yet (because, ice cream)

I think this was the largest crowd yet for the Grant Circle Social. Many thanks to Karima and Melinda for the really tasty ice cream.

If you're wondering why so many people are looking down in these photos, it's because there were so many kids. Kids on bikes. Kids drawing with chalk. Kids playing ball. Petworth is going to get the nickname "Stroller City" soon. If you move to Petworth and don't want kids, drink bottled water to be safe, lol.

If you'd like to host or co-host a Social like Karima and Melinda just did, please email Rob Mandle.

Please feel free to tag yourself and others in the photos on Facebook.

Sherman Circle Social draws large crowd

Sherman Circle Social draws large crowd

Tonight was the first Sherman Circle Social, a gathering of neighbors who live near and around Sherman Circle. What first started out as really nice weather suddenly became a huge downpour or rain right at 5:30 -- right when the Social was supposed to start. I arrived a few minutes early and huddled in my car watching the drenched people on bicycles yell at drivers as they all tried to share the road. And then, just as suddenly, the rain stopped, the sun came out and the Social was on. Read more and see a photo gallery after the break:

Don't miss the new Sherman Circle Social from 5:30 to 6:30. The weather should be great, and they'll have some lemonade and paper cups. Feel free to bring stuff to share if you'd like.

Kids are most definitely welcome!

Please share this with neighbors that may not be on the listservs or read Petworth News!

A Petworth shindig with great neighbors

A Petworth shindig with great neighbors

I find myself thinking a lot (and writing a lot) about what it means to live in a neighborhood. I’ve talked about the Petworth Dance Project, the Jazz ProjectSocials, trash clean-ups… residents coming together to meet and hang out. People enjoying their neighbors. And now I think I can add the Petworth News Shindig as another great example. That’s pretty awesome.

I think last night’s Shindig was pretty successful. I estimate about 70 people came by over the... Read more to see a huge photo gallery...

SW Petworth Social gathers crowd

DSC_7970.JPG

I dropped by the Southwest Petworth Lemonade Social this evening (Kansas & Quincy). It was nice to see some of the regulars and some new faces. I grabbed only a few photos this time -- and apparently even though I left at 8:15, more people arrived after I left, including Councilmember Brandon Todd. It's great to see people coming out to meet each other!

Please feel free to tag yourself in the photos on Facebook!

Sherman Circle Social is coming next week

Sherman Circle Social is coming next week

Get back Grant Circle, get on with yourself SW Petworth Lemonade Social, here comes the new Sherman Circle Social.

This is awesome. What started with an idea by local resident Rob Mandle back in the fall to get Grant Circle area neighbors together to meet and casually socialize has spread around Petworth.  Russ Breckenridge started the Lemonade Social at Quincy & Kansas (it's tomorrow, btw) and now Pam Brown has launched the Sherman Circle Social.

SW Petworth Lemonade Social

Just a quick reminder that the next southwest Petworth Lemonade Social is tomorrow at 6:30pm at the triangle park at Kansas Ave and Quincy St NW. It's a great chance to meet nearby neighbors and talk with people you already know. Make sure you tell neighbors who may not be on Facebook or online about it (and then tell them to go online and read Petworth News, obviously).

See you there!
