There's a new Facebook Group for Brightwood and Upper GA Ave

There’s a new local Facebook Group on the block! If you live north of Military Ave/Missouri Road (e.g., Brightwood, Colonial Village, Shepherd Park, Takoma, Manor Park) and want a smaller online space to connect with neighbors and share local news, check out the Brightwood and Upper Georgia Ave (DC) Community Group.

I’m your friendly, anxious moderator Maria, a resident of Brightwood. This new Facebook group was born out of a desire for more hyper-localized community connection and conversation spanning the local neighborhoods connected by the Upper Georgia Ave Main Street BID. The new group is meant to supplement – not replace! – existing large area groups like the Greater Petworth Facebook page and other hyper-neighborhood-specific groups.

You can be a member of both the Petworth and the Brightwood / Upper GA pages.

Ready to jump in? Here’s some suggestions:

DO:

  • Answer the questions and agree to the rules when you request to join!

  • Share community updates and resources

  • Organize and spread the word about community events (concerts, clean-ups, recycling events, etc.)

  • Ask for and recommend local contractors and businesses (businesses may only advertise once every 30 days)

  • Ask questions about local businesses, institutions, and amenities (“When’s the rec center going to reopen?” “Does anyone send their kids to this preschool?”)

  • Ask for and offer services (pet-sitting, tutoring, lawn-mowing – keeping the 30-day rule in mind if you’re selling a service!)

  • Give or sell stuff you don’t want anymore

DON’T:

  • Don’t be mean to each other.

  • Don’t post links without context.

  • Don’t post real estate if you’re a realtor/broker (if you’re selling or renting out your own home that’s ok!).

  • Don’t share personal gofundme/cashapp links (I’ve seen it become a problem with telling the real people who need help from the scammers in other groups).

  • Don’t give away animals, unless you’re posting on behalf of a reputable animal rescue.
