Holiday Lights: Local businesses spread socially distanced holiday cheer

by Peter Fortner

It's that time of year again when many light up our homes and our hearts for the holidays. The tradition of decorating lights and homes may go back centuries, but a newer tradition along Georgia Avenue is coming along for its second year. Donned with holiday lights, local businesses are spreading cheer and would love for you to drive or walk by to bring the community together, in a safe and fun way. Stop by the 2nd annual Lower Georgia Avenue Main Street Holiday Lights to explore, shop, and play this holiday season.

The businesses along lower Georgia Avenue and the 800 block of Upshur Street will be decked out with holiday lights from December 1st through December 31st. You’re invited to wander the corridor with neighbors and visitors to enjoy amazing holiday specials and activities throughout the month — and take part in voting for your favorite display and a virtual scavenger hunt.

Visit LGAHolidayLights.org to check out their Holiday Guide—a guide to holiday specials, discounts, and events happening along the corridor — updated on an ongoing basis.

Between December 1st and December 14th, wander the corridor and then cast your vote for your favorite business display to determine the People's Choice Award winner.

This year, the Lower Georgia Avenue Main Street Holiday Lights is part of a broader citywide effort. Main Streets throughout the District have joined together to bring DC residents a spectacular holiday experience: DC Holiday Lights!

Also beginning December 1st, the public is invited to participate in the official DC Holiday Lights (Virtual) Scavenger Hunt. Participants earn entries for each participating commercial corridor they visit during the month of December, and can cast their vote for their favorite corridor to help determine which corridor's Holiday Lights display is The Best of DC. The more entries they earn, the more likely they are to win great prizes from local businesses all across the District.

The Scavenger Hunt went live on December 1st at DCHolidayLights.org.

Remember to support your local small businesses this holiday season! The holiday lights are the perfect way for your family to find them in a fun and festive way.
