Timber! Wood-fired goodness is coming to Upshur

What do you do when you and your friend don’t enjoy working at a tech start-up, but love pizza? Start a pizza company, naturally.

That’s exactly what Andrew Dana and Chris Brady did a year ago. After working at a local education tech start-up and not feeling very inspired by the job, but sharing a passion for all things pizza, the two created an original food truck: a wood-fired oven pizza truck. And they’re bringing that passion and their unique pizza stylings to Petworth.

“We just passed our first anniversary as a company on May 28th,” Andrew Dana said when I spoke to him this week. “Things have happened pretty quick this year, and we knew we wanted to expand,” Andrew said.

He and his partner Chris have spent the past year taking their 1967 baby blue pickup and mobile brick oven to farmer’s markets and other events around the DC area, selling their original pizza creations, as well as doing catering for special events.

Both Andrew and Chris are local and knew they wanted to open a restaurant somewhere in this area. Andrew grew up in Mt. Pleasant and is looking for an apartment in Petworth (“Yeah, I definitely want to move to Petworth, close by,”) and Chris lives near 15th and New Hampshire Ave.

“I’ve been falling in love with Upshur and Petworth for awhile,” Andrew said. “We were looking for a location that would work for us, and when we saw the building on Upshur Street, we got ‘that feeling’ and knew it was the place.”

The new restaurant, to be located at 809 Upshur St NW, will be called the Timber Pizza Co. Andrew said their plan is to keep the restaurant simple in design, matching their overall theme of “Vermont / campy” wood minimalist, and matching with their 1967 baby blue pickup truck.

Inside, they plan to seat 49 at small tables and larger communal tables, and hope to offer outdoor seating as well. Inside there will be a large brick oven, placed where customers can watch the pizzas being made and then fired. They plan on installing bay windows on the front of the building so that the brick oven can be seen from the street. They also plan on offering craft beer from around the city, as well as wine and cocktails.

The menu looks great (see below), and they take a lot of pride in what they offer. “We’re really into collaborating with other DC restaurants and trucks,” Andrew said. “We want to showcase other local flavors on our pizzas.”

For example, Andrew told me how they thought a BBQ chicken pizza would taste great. “But it’s hard to make a great pizza AND make a great BBQ chicken — so we found a great partner who excels at BBQ, put their chicken on the pizza and it was amazing."

Andrew and Chris decided that they will rotate their menu as they partner with restaurants like DCity Smokehouse, Indigo (Indian cuisine) and DGS Delicatessen in Dupont (Andrew’s thinking a breakfast pizza with smoked salmon and capers).

And they know the area has seen an increase in little ones:  “We are definitely planning on offering items on the menu perfect for kids,” Andrew said.

Andrew said they want to connect with the Petworth Community Market to set up their pizza truck at the market a few times over the season while they work on renovating the building.

“The landlord has some work to do inside before we can take possession, and then we’re hoping to open by early winter,” he said.

I asked Andrew to let me know if they do book a spot at the Petworth Market so I can let everyone know. I’m already looking forward to a pizza place on Upshur St.

Here’s a sample of their menu:

CHEESE, PLEASE
San Marzano tomatoes, low-moisture mozzarella/provolone, fresh mozzarella, fresh basil

PRETTY IN PEPPERONI
"CHEESE, PLEASE" + pepperoni

GREEN MONSTER
Pesto, fresh mozzarella, feta, kale, zucchini

NORTH SHORE
"CHEESE, PLEASE" + fresh jalapeño, pineapple, and prosciutto

A noisy and contentious ANC 4C meeting

A noisy and contentious ANC 4C meeting

The ANC 4C meeting was a contentious meeting. Lights at EL Haynes despised by residents, a new condo on Varnum despised by neighbors, a lack of parking at the proposed development at Latney’s Funeral Home and a visit by the DCRA Director Melinda Bolling rounded out the evening. Oh, and sadly, it was Commissioner Joe Maloney’s last meeting before he resigns (he’s moving to Maryland).

Timber Pizza coming to Upshur (confirmed)

809upshur.png

809 Upshur St NW, the red brick building that used to be a small church and is now vacant, will be a restaurant focusing on pizza, Timber Pizza Co.

According to a neighbor who saw them out taking pictures of the building and confirmed later by Popville, Timber Pizza will open a local restaurant featuring their wood-fired pizzas. I've reached out to one of the property owners as well as Timber Pizza and will update as I hear more.

Update: I spoke with Andrew Dana, one of the owners of Timber Pizza, and he confirmed they're planning on opening in late fall or early winter, later this year. "It's true! We are incredible excited to become a part of the Petworth family!"

According to their website, I think this would be their first location besides a food truck:

"A few years back at a local tech company, Washington native Andrew Dana and Annapolis local Chris Brady met and became buddies who shared two primary passions in life: pizza and basketball.

The Timber guys serve authentic wood fired pizza using only the freshest local ingredients and incorporating new twists on traditional favorites.  They can be found anywhere from local farmers markets to wineries/breweries and are available to cater your next private event." (Timber Pizza About page)

It'll be nice to see this location cleaned up and offering services to the community. While many were hoping for a retail business (I heard a masseuse was looking at this spot), a local pizza joint is pretty good. Maybe give Red Rocks a challenge?

Powell construction update meeting

ANC 4C05 Commissioner Zach Teutsch sent out an email today about the construction at Powell Elementary. The DC Department of General Services will present on their progress with the Powell renovation project and the Twin Oaks construction at a meeting on June 11th at 6:15pm at Powell Elementary (1350 Upshur St NW).

Zach is hopeful that they will solicit community input about the design of the parking lot, as there has been vocal support for green screening and permeable paving for the parking lot.

Zach will followup with DGS to request they seek community input. If you have questions or concerns, contact Commissioner Teutsch

Speaking of properties in the area...

I noticed that 3912 8th Street NW, which has had an "Under Contract" sign hanging from the Fairfax Realty sign for quite a while, now has a Vacant Property sticker on the window. Of course, that sticker really goes with the smashed glass of the security door and the pile of newspapers on the porch.

Also interesting, newly renovated and very expensive 703 Upshur St NW also got a nice bright yellow Vacant Property sticker on its window. Wasn't there on Sunday, I don't believe, when they had an open house. Oops.

More info on how and why the city considers properties vacant is available on the DCRA website.

16 Grant Circle ... now rubble.

On my way to ANC 4D meeting, saw what was left of 16 Grant Circle.
(Spoiler: it's rubble.)

According to local realtor Ryan DeSilva, "It was a really nice large detached house with a wrap around porch."

Really hope the new design of the structure they're going to build compliments the neighborhood (which is now an Historic Landmark).

Part 3 of WAMU coverage on DCRA & permitting issues in Petworth

Part 3 of WAMU's series on property flipping and issues with regulations written by Martin Austermuhle is now available.

As Development Spreads Across D.C.’s Neighborhoods, Can Regulators Keep Up?

This third and final part focuses on the recent Petworth walk-through that Councilmember Vincent Orange conducted, along with residents and ANC 4C Commissioners Joe Martin and Kathleen Crowley

Pam Lloyd walks with Councilmember Vincent Orange. (Martin Austermuhle is in the back.) Photo: Joe Martin.

From the piece:

"Most of my time is spent addressing complaints from residents about developers who do not follow the proper rules and regulations and the lack of oversight on the part of DCRA,” wrote Kathleen Crowley, the head of an Advisory Neighborhood Commission in the area, in a letter to legislators in March. “Let me be clear, I am not talking about simple matters of permit creep but rather egregious examples of developers going well beyond what the permits allow."

The lack of oversight and enforcement by DCRA has been a recurring theme during the city’s real estate booms. As more construction happens — whether homes being flipped, expanded or converted into condo units — the agency is strained with issuing permits in a timely way and then policing the builders to ensure they are doing only the permitted work."

Whole Foods coming to Florida Avenue

Wow... a 40,000 sq ft Whole Foods is coming south of Petworth and Parkview at 965 Florida Avenue NW. This spot has been sitting empty for years. There used to be a car wash there that I brought my car to, then they tore it down for new construction and it floundered.

From the developer press release:

"The 370,000-square-foot mixed-use building will feature approximately 400 residential units, 30 percent of which will be made available as affordable dwelling units. MRP and Ellis will begin processing the Planned Unit Development for the building this summer."

It was sad to see that area just sitting. Nice to see new development coming.

WAMU looks at "toxic renovations" and DCRA problems

Ward 4 resident and WAMU reporter Martin Austermuhle has started publishing his three-part series on problems with flipped / renovated homes in the area. (He went on a neighborhood walkthrough with CM Vincent Orange the other week.)

It's a good read and focuses on a young couple, Stuart Crampton and his wife Violeta Roman, who purchased a flipped house on Perry St NW.

CM Orange walks through Petworth with residents

Councilmember Vincent Orange is working to prohibit pop-up conversions in R-4 zoned areas around the city (with his proposed Prohibition on Single Family Dwelling Conversions Emergency Amendment Act).

CM Orange went on a neighborhood walk-through with several residents and ANC 4C Commissioners Joe Martin (SMD 4C09) and Kathleen Crowley (SMD 4C10) to look at alleged permit violations at recent or ongoing construction of conversions, pop-up and complete redevelopments of existing properties.

“Councilmember Vincent Orange, chair of the Committee on Business, Consumer and Regulatory Affairs, walked with me and Kathleen for about 90 minutes in our SMDs,” said Commissioner Martin.
