The US Census starts this month -- tips on how to get counted!
/The census of all people inside the United States, mandated by the US Constitution to be collected every 10 years, starts this month. Invites to participate go out March 12th.
The 2020 Census is easy, safe, and confidential. You are being asked to answer a simple questionnaire about yourself and everyone who lives with you.
The US Census bureau wants you to participate — you can reply by mail, online or by phone. (If you don’t respond, someone will visit your house to take the census in person.)
“The 2020 Census is more than just a constitutionally mandated activity – it’s about equity and making sure every resident is counted,” said Mayor Muriel Bowser. “Filling out the census ensures the District receives the federal resources we need – from education, housing, health care, and more – to give everyone living in our city a fair shot.”
Some tips on not getting scammed…
Here’s what the Census LETTER will look like…
Here’s what the Census FORM will look like…
Don’t fill out a Census form for someone else.
Only Census Bureau employees may collect responses directly from individuals. If you are providing devices for people to provide their own responses online, do not enter that individual’s responses for them or watch them enter their responses.
If a resident requests assistance in completing their form, please direct them to the response option (online, phone, mail/paper, Census taker visit to the home) that best suits their needs.
Don’t fall for fake Census websites.
Check the web address of any supposed census website. Make sure it has census.gov in the address and look for https:// or a lock symbol in the browser window.
Don’t fall for fake Census mailings!
Check the return address of any supposed Census mailing, it should have a return address of Jefferson, IN, National Processing Center.
Don’t listen to rumors or misinformation.
The Census is a count of all residents, regardless of citizenship or immigration status. Report misinformation and disinformation at rumors@census.gov.
Don’t trust caller ID or other scammers using “spoofing” tools to make it appear they are calling or emailing from a real Census Bureau location (phone or email).
The US Census Bureau WILL NOT:
Will not email you the 2020 Census Form
Will not ask for your Social Security number, bank, credit card, or account numbers or any personal information not included on the Census questionnaire.
Will not ask for money or donations.
Will not ask for support for a political party
Will not threaten jail time
If you experience ANY of the above, hang up and call the National Processing Center at 800-523-3205, 800-642-0469 or 800-877-8339 (TDD/TTY) to verify that a phone survey is legitimate.
