Lighthouse Yoga on 9th & Upshur to close next month (update: reopened at Teatro de la Luna!)
/UPDATE: Lighthouse Yoga found a new home at Teatro de la Luna (4020 Georgia Ave NW). They’re seeking a permanent space.
Meanwhile, you can see our schedule and other events on our website lighthouseyogacenter.com
The tides of development sweep all under the waves, and Lighthouse Yoga at 4203 9th Street NW is the latest example of a building owner cashing in on developing their property. Lighthouse Yoga is set to close on September 22nd as the building they lease is being sold to a new owner. The new owner wants the yoga studio out as soon as possible in order to raze the existing structure and put something else on this small block. The studio's commercial lease doesn't give them any recourse but to leave.
Owner Julie Eisenberg sent an email to her clients today telling them about the upcoming closure and offering some alternative locations as she looks for a new place to call home for the studio.
It's absolutely the right of the new building owner to redevelop the property, but as someone who recently discovered yoga -- taking classes with Meredith, an awesome yoga instructor -- I'll definitely miss this long-time business. Julie has become a great friend, and was one of the first sponsors of Petworth News, and for that early support I will always be grateful.
Here's Julie's email:
It’s with great sadness that I must let you know that Lighthouse Yoga Center will be closing our doors at our 9th Street location on September 22. We were notified by our landlord that the building is being sold, and the new owner wants us out immediately. Unfortunately, according to the terms of our commercial lease, we have no recourse but to leave.
Many of our Kundalini classes will continue in alternate locations, though there will be a short break for some of them during the Italy Retreat. Some of our fall series, including Yoga Fundamentals and Baby and Me Yoga will just be shortened, while others – Woman Warrior, Kundalini Fundamentals, and Yoga for Back Pain – will be moved to an alternate location. And of course the retreats will go on as planned!
Of course we’ll keep you posted on our search for a new home base and in the meantime I’ll make sure you can find your favorite teachers at whatever locations they end up teaching.
I hope you’ll make all the effort in the world to come in for some final classes in our cozy 9th Street space. You can see our full schedule.
