New house, new crime victims: a stolen truck and a shooting on Kennedy Street
/A man showed up at his new house in 16th Street Heights on July 3rd to walk-through the home with the property manager. He parked his truck in the driveway and went into the home. 45 minutes later, he discovered his truck was stolen. Three hours after that, the truck was used in a shooting at 7th and Kennedy Streets NW.
The new neighbor had just driven from Illinois with his 2012 Toyota Tundra truck full of his possessions — clothes, a few household items, a computer, several suitcases and other military gear (he moved to DC with the US military). He pulled into the driveway on Allison Street and 15th, expecting a simple pro forma walk-through of property, get the keys, move his things in. Instead, he discovered 45 minutes later that the truck was stolen. Welcome to DC.
By 5:51pm, MPD responded to a shooting at 7th and Kennedy Streets, less than a mile and a half away from his new home, where two gunshot victims were found with non-life-threatening injuries. The getaway car, caught on video, was described as “black Toyota Truck and has damage on the driver’s side front window, front and rear windshield and passenger side door. The vehicle was last seen bearing Illinois tags.” (MPD’s full description below.)
Alas, after moving across the country, serving his country, he has to replace all of his possessions. If it weren’t for Covid, I’d recommend a block party at his new house to stock him up on essentials. As for now, he says he’s filed insurance claims.
