Lincoln's Cottage slowly reopens to visitors while AFRH stays closed
/President Lincoln’s Cottage museum, on the grounds of the Armed Forces Retirement Home, is reopening to visitors on Saturday, July 11th, after four months of being closed due to Covid.
“We are reopening to the public on Saturday with three new outdoor experiences to allow our guests to safely gain new perspectives on Abraham Lincoln and the home that he loved,” said a spokesperson from the Cottage. “While our grounds are open to these guided experiences, the Cottage building itself will remain closed to continue to protect our community.”
The Cottage will be offering outdoor three tours:
Preservation Tours: President Lincoln’s Cottage opened to the public for the first time in 2008 after an 8-year restoration effort. This tour will focus on the Cottage architecture, exterior restoration, and ongoing preservation of this National Monument.
Storytelling on the South Lawn: Inspired by Lincoln’s own penchant for storytelling at the Cottage, guides will draw upon the history of the Cottage to tell stories about the important legacy that President Lincoln created here – including the development of the Emancipation Proclamation.
Cemetery Tour: Located just two hundred yards from the front of the Cottage, the US Soldiers’ and Airmen’s Home National Cemetery holds incredible significance to President Lincoln’s time at the Cottage. This tour will illuminate the lives of the thousands of men and women buried in one of the country’s oldest National Cemeteries.
