Metro to temporarily close Petworth & CoHeights stations in July for maintenance (updated)

WMATA has announced a list of Metro track work and station closings this summer for “preventative maintenance and planned capital work.” The Orange, Silver, Yellow and Green lines are all affected by track work, with some seeing station closings.

Some of the work will take place at night or on weekends for “enhanced preventive maintenance including cable testing to prevent smoke and fire incidents, stray current testing, trackbed cleaning, switch maintenance, torqueing (tightening fasteners, joint nuts and bolts) to eliminate excessive strain on infrastructure, and track geometry work to ensure the correct rail alignment.”

The Georgia Avenue/Petworth and Columbia Heights stations will be closed from July 6th through July 18th for radio cable installation. A free shuttle will be available between Ft. Totten and U Street stations. Note that WMATA caveats that dates could slip due to weather, etc.

  • Free shuttle buses replace trains between U Street and Fort Totten (lower level) stations, with stops at Columbia Heights and Georgia Ave-Petworth stations.

  • Yellow Line trains will operate between Huntington and U Street ONLY. Use Green Line for service to/from stations north of Fort Totten.

  • Consider using Red Line as an alternate when traveling between Fort Totten and Gallery Place-Chinatown.

  • Customers should allow about 20 minutes of additional travel time if traveling through one of the work areas below. Shuttle buses will operate more frequently than train service to reduce waiting; however additional time is required for transferring between bus and rail. Shuttle bus service is free, and customers should board through the rear doors of the bus.
