Things to do on New Year's Eve in Petworth (updated)
/It's the second annual Petworth News New Year’s Eve Roundup!
(updated 12/28)
Good news for those planning to ring in 2018 in the neighborhood: a flurry of bar and restaurant openings in 2017 means you have plenty of options to get your party on. Petworth has too much going on to do a comprehensive round-up, so we’ve picked the best of the best. Trends this year: lots of nostalgia, fewer kid-friendly options but two ball drops in Sherman Circle. Here are our top pics:
See the Ball Drop in Petworth... Twice!
Where: 1 Sherman Circle NW
What: New Year's Eve Ball Drop in the front yard; 7pm ball drop for families, then again at midnight.
More Details: Come out to Sherman Circle as neighbors Chris and Curtis use their front yard for their annual NYE ball drop as they transform into Petworth's own version of Times Square. (This is the same house that puts up the awesome Halloween display with the pirate boat.)
Taqueria del Barrio: If you’re looking for a family friendly NYE celebration
Who: Taqueria del Barrio, 821 Upshur St NW
What: Prix fixe dinner menu
Details: If you’d rather grab some grub, hit the sack, and wake up to a better 2018 – or if you’d just rather celebrate early with your kids – then Taqueria del Barrio has you covered. The restaurant is offering a family-style prix fixe dinner menu featuring an appetizer, two adult entrees, two kid’s entrees, and a bottle of sparkling wine, all for a great $75 per family (not $75 each person). The menu will feature del Barrio mainstays like Queso Fundido, Chimichangas, Chile Relleno, Mole con Pollo, and more. The prix fixe menu is available from 4pm to 7:30pm, or you can order a la carte until the restaurant closes at 9pm. Details and reservations online.
Ten Tigers: If you wanna celebrate 90s' style
Who: Ten Tigers Parlour, 3813 Georgia Ave NW
What: “Back in da Day” 90s New Year’s Eve Party
Details: This is definitely the best thing happening in Petworth this NYE. It’s a 90s dance party, featuring music by Jay-Z, Biggie, Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Ace of Base, Sisqo, Nirvana, Backstreet Boys, Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, MC Hammer, and more. If this list doesn’t have you firing up YouTube, you have no soul (or, you are significantly younger than I am – but I digress).
So how big is this thing? Two floors, two bars, four rooms, and an outdoor patio. Tired of dancing? Take a break and check out some 90s' arcade games, including Street Fighter.
A $60 ticket gets you open bar and appetizers from 9 to 10pm, a champagne toast at midnight and party favors. And if you really want to relive your glory days, VIP tables are available. Tickets and information online.
The Pitch Tavern: If you wanna turn up, but don’t wanna dress up
Who: The Pitch Tavern, 4015 Georgia Ave NW
What: Sneakers & Sweatsuits NYE party
Details: Gotta give it to this bar – it really knows the neighborhood. We like to drink, but don’t expect us to get all dolled up to do it. Enter Pitch Tavern’s “Sneakers and Sweatsuits” NYE party, which invites you to show up in your finest sweatsuit, your freshest sneakers, and enjoy good food, open bar, and dancing.
An $80 ticket gets you premium open bar from 9 pm to 1 am, an appetizer buffet from 9 to 11:30pm, a champagne toast, a DJ and door prizes. Table reservations also available. Tickets and information online.
Red Derby: If you wanna turn up, but can’t decide if you prefer the 70s or the 90s
Who: Red Derby, 3718 14th St NW
What: Decades of Decadence party
Details: I told you there’s a lot of nostalgia happening this year! Maybe we’re all longing for a simpler time? Anyway, if you like the oldies but can’t decide which oldies, Red Derby has got you covered: the bar will feature a 1978 theme and music upstairs, and a 1998 theme and music downstairs. Show up in your bellbottoms, or your JNCOs. No cover, but $10 in advance snags you a seat reservation, and if you’re rolling deep – like, 20 people deep – you can rent a portion of Red Derby’s roof deck. Expect noisemakers, party hats, crowns, a free champagne toast at midnight, and of course some killer tunes. Tickets and information on Facebook.
Slash Run: If you wanna rock the night and get down with a burger
Who: Slash Run, 201 Upshur St NW
What: New Year’s Eve Bash at Slash
Details: If your idea of a good New Year’s Eve is unlimited booze, a juicy burger, and a rock band, this low key dive will deliver the goods. Fifty bucks gets you open bar all night, plus a burger and fries. Or, pay as you go. Highlight of the night will be a performance from the Paris Jaywalkers, a punk rock cover band being formed just for the occasion by members of local bands Pentagram, Sister Ex, and History Repeated. In addition, a DJ will spin punk, oil metal, deathrock, and more. Details and reservations online.
Little Coco's: If you’re planning to make it to midnight but not much later… and you like good food
Who: Little Coco’s, 3907 14th St NW
What: New Year’s Eve Dinner @ Coco’s
Details: If New Year’s for you is all about the food, then check out Little Coco’s. The 14th street standout is whipping up a special prix fixe New Year’s Eve dinner menu that features staples like Cacio e Pepe, Lasagna, and Tiramisu, along with more eye popping treats like roasted oysters and milk fed suckling pig. Choose from three options: a three-course dinner before 7 pm for $45; a four-course dinner before 7 pm for $55; and a four-course dinner with a glass of prosecco and a chef’s treat after 7 pm for $65. But don’t worry about getting kicked out in the cold after dinner: Little Coco’s is staying open through midnight, so cozy up to the restaurant bar, have a few more drinks, and enjoy a midnight Champagne toast before calling it a night.
