We're gonna be on TV and want your opinion
/So a local TV station is doing a show about real estate in Petworth and 16th Street Heights, and asked Petworth News to offer some on-camera background on the history and interesting architectural details on both neighborhoods.
The show asked us to touch on how the neighborhoods were built, organized and have changed over time. They are interested in architectural styles, population of residents, why folks lived there in the past, why they continue to move and live here, what people did and do for a living and for fun.
I definitely want to talk about how the neighborhoods have changed demographics since the early 1900s, how gentrification and racial codicils kept people of color out of the neighborhoods, how “White flight” in the 60s changed the demographics again, and how they’ve now become some of the most diverse neighborhoods in DC.
Beyond the historical demographics, we also have some amazing architecture, and we’ll want to talk about that as well.
I’m obviously a bit familiar with Petworth, but not as much with 16th Street Heights. So I’m asking for your help in gathering good data on both neighborhoods to ensure I’m on message and correct with what I say.
(Ed Note: If I’m asked to represent the neighborhood, I like to ensure I get the neighborhood’s input. I did this before when Curbed DC interviewed Petworth News, and when the New York Times did an interview. Worked out well.)
