Get to know NW Saturday Academy, a cool non-profit that teaches STEM to DC students

I met Christopher Alexander, the founder of the NW Saturday Academy, last November at the meeting of Advisory Neighborhood Commission 4D, when he spoke about the program. NW Saturday Academy is a math, computer science and robotics program for DC youth (primarily third, fourth and fifth graders). Their Saturday classes introduce elementary school students to Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) topics in a fun and challenging environment that encourages them to use their creativity and explore. Students come from different schools within Ward 4 and throughout the city.

Think yoga isn’t for you? Think again, says Lighthouse Yoga studio

Think yoga isn’t for you? Think again, says Lighthouse Yoga studio

Yoga is not just a passing fad. According to a recent study, 36.7 million people in the United States already practice yoga, up from 20.4 million in 2012. That means that over 10% of the US population now already takes yoga classes (or practices at home), and another 24% have said that they are likely to start practicing in the coming year!

Luckily, Petworth residents have an easy way to get started. Lighthouse Yoga Center, a small, community-oriented and locally-owned yoga studio located at 4203 9th Street NW, offers a 6-week course called Yoga Fundamentals that’s a great way to introduce you to the practice in a non-competitive and unintimidating way.

Ed note: I'm pleased to present an article by Julie Eisenberg, owner of Lighthouse Yoga on 9th Street and a long-time sponsor and supporter of Petworth News. Julie wrote this sponsored article on behalf of her studio's latest yoga class for beginners, called "Yoga Fundamentals."

Is there a conflict of interest for Petworth News & sponsors? (spoiler: no)

Is there a conflict of interest for Petworth News & sponsors? (spoiler: no)

A neighbor on the 16th Street Heights listserv sent me an email about my article looking for sponsors with a question about my conflict of interest policy. It's a good question she asked, so I replied to her email.

I thought I'd re-publish the exchange here in case others have the same question (I've redacted her name for privacy reasons).

It's a Petworth News "Call for Sponsors!"

It's a Petworth News "Call for Sponsors!"

PetworthNews.org is just over a year old, and it's time to look for sponsors for the website.

Looking for sponsors is my least favorite activity; I'd rather write articles than chase advertising. But since I spend 30+ hours a week doing this "hobby," the extra small income helps pay for web hosting, equipment, software and other web services. And frankly, helping to support local businesses and organizations is one of my favorite things to do.

If you want to reach a large, local audience... read on!

Help support veterans and the Friends of the Soldiers Home

Help support veterans and the Friends of the Soldiers Home

I'm a big fan of the Friends of the Soldiers Home, and try to volunteer with them when I can. They do great events like "Jingo night" (like bingo but with pictures instead of numbers) as well as a fun Saloon night, where volunteers chat with and serve drinks and food to veterans during live music and other events. They also put on the July 4th events, Oktoberfest and other community events at the Armed Forces Retirement Home.

They're looking for support from neighbors to help meet their funding goals. As we move into the holiday season, bear in mind that every dollar helps.

Read a letter from Mary Bucci, president of the Friends of the Soldiers Home, after the break:

Marc Dosik: investing in the future of Upshur and Petworth

The resurgence of the western end of Upshur Street in Petworth is a somewhat new thing, having really taken off only in the past 5 year or so. Early businesses like Domku, Bentley’s, Fia’s and Cuzzins have helped to shape the street, while established businesses like Philip’s Shoe Repair at 808 Upshur have helped to anchor the street for long-time and newly arrived residents alike.

One of the people who came to Petworth and decided to make Upshur the focus of his business is real estate broker Marc Dosik. Read more about Marc and his latest plans on Upshur Street after the break...

Kevin Wood sponsors Petworth News

I’m happy to introduce another new sponsor for Petworth News, Kevin Wood.

Kevin approached me about sponsoring the blog a couple of months ago out of an interest in supporting local initiatives like Petworth News, much as he was one of the first sponsors for Popville.com when Dan Silverman first started out years ago.

As an experienced real estate agent, Kevin has been working in Petworth for many years. Originally from Maryland’s Eastern Shore and received a Bachelor’s Degree from Hampden-Sydney College (in Virginia) in French/Political Science and a Master’s Degree in French Literature from the Catholic University of America. He bought his first condo in Columbia Heights in 1999, and a row house there in 2001 (but I won’t hold that against him). He can be seen walking his two dogs, Walter the dachshund and Seamus the hound, around the area.

Kevin is experienced working with all types of buyers in all price ranges and areas, and has been told that his patience, enthusiasm and ability to clearly explain the details of buying a property have been particularly welcomed by first-time buyers. “My goal is to make the buying and selling of a home a happy experience for all involved,” Kevin said.

Kevin is a member of the Greater Capitol Area Association of Realtors and the National Association of Realtors. Known for his extensive local real estate knowledge, Kevin has been quoted in the Washingtonian magazine, Urban Turf and The Washington Post.  Kevin also produces the monthly real estate sales numbers for Popville.

Plus, Kevin speaks fluent French and German, and is proficient in Spanish and Irish (gaeilge), so he's got you covered if English isn't your primary language.

You can find him online at kevinjosephwood.com.

Why are so many realtors sponsoring Petworth News? Because people know that Petworth is an awesome neighborhood to live, whether you’re renting or buying.

Lighthouse Yoga sponsors Petworth News

lighthouse.png

I’m pleased to say that Lighthouse Yoga is now sponsoring Petworth News.

I’ve known studio owner Julie Eisenberg for quite some time, and have always appreciated her involvement in the Petworth community, supporting and being personally involved in local events. I also appreciate that she took a terrible-looking building on 9th and turned it into a nice location for a now popular yoga studio.

Julie has been practicing yoga for nearly 20 years. She and her partner Glen Sperling (of Harmony Remodeling, who has renovated many homes in the area) live in the home she purchased near Sherman Circle in 2006 with their two dogs and one cat. She loves being in easy walking distance to the studio.

Lighthouse Yoga Center, located at 4203 9th Street NW, is a community yoga studio that strives to meet the needs of our diverse Petworth neighborhood. They specialize in alignment-oriented Hatha Yoga, where they teach people from the ground up how to practice yoga safely and effectively. They offer all levels of classes, from their very popular Fundamentals series to several weekly classes for yoga teachers who want to continue to develop their skills.

“Lighthouse Yoga is also DC’s only Kundalini Yoga studio,” said Julie. “Our Kundalini classes draw students from all over the region.” (Kundalini is a form of yoga that emphasizes dynamic movements, breathing, and meditation).

“Some of our other popular classes are prenatal, kids yoga and Yoga for Larger Bodies,” she said. “Many of our teachers live here in Petworth, and we run some of the most highly-acclaimed teacher training programs in the DC-area for students who want to learn to teach yoga.”

“Our goal at Lighthouse is to provide a space here in Petworth where neighbors can come together to have fun, learn and evolve,” Julie said.

There are a ton of new classes and workshops happening this week at the studio that you should check out.

Get a Petworth News Discount!
Julie is offering a discount to Petworth News readers: Use coupon code “PNews5” to save 5% on purchases of $75 or more. (Definitely use the coupon to give me street cred.)  ;)

Thanks for supporting Petworth and the blog!

Yianni Konstantopoulos sponsors Petworth News

Yianni Konstantopoulos sponsors Petworth News

I’m pleased to say that local realtor Yianni Konstantopoulos has become a sponsor of Petworth News. I met Yianni back in the Spring when he reached out to me wanting to get to know each other. We’ve since become friends and have spent many an hour talking over a coffee at Qualia and a beer at Chez Billy about the neighborhood.

It was during one of our talks that Yianni became a sponsor of the Celebrate Petworth Festival, and has been really supportive of local events. It was actually Yianni's initial sponsorship that gave me the confidence of moving to a separate website for this blog. Yianni is really passionate about local real estate and doing more with both buyers and brokers in the Petworth area. He's a great guy to know. Read more about Yianni and his business after the break:

Eddie Suarez sponsors Petworth News

I’m happy to announced that local Petworth resident and real estate agent Eddie Suarez has become a Petworth News sponsor.

Mehl Penrose, Ariel and Eddie Suarez.

Mehl Penrose, Ariel and Eddie Suarez.

I first met Eddie and his husband Mehl Penrose a few years back at a yard sale on Rock Creek Church Road, and both were immediately very warm and friendly to my wife and I.  (Now, I’m admittedly a little biased toward Eddie and Mehl, as they moved to DC from my hometown of Houston, Texas.) Like my family, Eddie and Mehl have a daughter at Powell Elementary School and are very involved with the parents' group.

You’ll see Eddie with his family all around DC, but especially in Petworth, where he is a very involved parent at Powell, engaged in community events like the Grant Circle Social and tree plantings and an eager Petworth Farmer’s Market supporter and customer.

Fast forward to today, and Eddie has changed careers from international business development and marketing with some rather large corporations, to becoming a passionate real estate agent, promoting Petworth and sharing his enthusiasm for our neighborhood with current and potential residents. Eddie mixes the best elements of his professional background with his love for real estate and helping people find the best property as a realtor with TheHershGroup.com at Long and Foster Real Estate, Inc.

“My strategy is based on providing an outstanding experience for my clients, getting to know them and especially understanding their concerns, needs and requirements,” Eddie said.  “As a Realtor, my goal is to provide top-notch service and customized tactics to assure clients have peace of mind when making decisions about buying or selling their properties.”

If you’re looking to move into Petworth, rent out a place or move out (what? why?), Eddie speaks Spanish and Portuguese and is available to assist you with your real estate needs. For more info about Eddie or to contact him, visit him online or email him with any questions. You can also find him on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram!

I truly appreciate the support and sign of confidence that Eddie is showing by sponsoring Petworth News! Support from sponsors like Eddie help fund this site as well as soirees like the upcoming Petworth News Shindig on June 29th. RSVP today if you haven’t already!

Big thanks to Fido & Kitty's World!

DSC_7181.JPG

Big thanks to Fido & Kitty's World at 4130 Georgia Avenue NW for being the first sponsor of the Petworth News website

My wife and I shop at Fido & Kitty’s World for our two dogs, picking up frozen and refrigerated meals (look, they’re not spoiled, they’re just gastronomically challenged. It's in everyone's interest that they don't eat Alpo or similar).

Semhar Hagos, the owner of Fido & Kitty’s World, has always been really easy to work with, and special orders the food for one of our dogs that we can't easily get otherwise. We feed one dog frozen raw food, and the other gets grain-free food. Both pups are happy.

You don’t need to special order food, they have a ton of high-quality food for cats and dogs already on the shelves.

Puppy play area behind the store.

The pet store features pet food, toys, beds and other pet needs, as well as a very cute dog play area on the back patio.

Fido & Kitty's World has been an active sponsor of many local events in Petworth, and if you own a pet, check them out as a way of saying thanks. You can find them at 4130 Georgia Avenue NW, and at fidoandkittysworld.com.

And hey, when you swing by, tell them you saw them on Petworth News!  :)
