New art show at Art of Noize evokes the African diaspora

by Cesse Ip

A cool art exhibition is opening at Art of Noize, with the opening reception on Saturday, March 6th from 7-10pm (in the rear of 821 Upshur St NW). Featuring local artists Emond Nassa and Khalid Thompson’s exhibition, Transatlantic: Innermost Connections.

The exhibition features 16 sculptured works of Burkina Faso-born Nassa and the abstract brushstrokes of American-born Thompson. The show will be accompanied by a pre-recorded artist talk hosted by Rodney “BUCK!” Herring, available on the Art of Noize website on March 11th.

Color, form and textural expressions of cultural heritage and identity allow for a more diverse context in the work of these artists. The show embodies an energetic synergy as evidence of the depth of collective memory across waters and land mass. On the mutual understanding across culture, Thompson says, “Although there's great distance and time between Africa and the Diaspora, there still is an underlying relationship of character and cultural expression. ”

The gallery accepts visitors on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 11am-4pm, and Fridays and Saturdays from 12pm-6pm.

The exhibition will be on display until March 31st.

COVID-19 compliances are in place, so please wear your mask and maintain physical distance.

To schedule an appointment to view the exhibition, please contact Art of Noize via email.
