DPR officially opens futsal mini-pitch at Petworth Park

If you're into soccer or just want to know what the hullabaloo is about, the Department of Parks and Recreation is putting on an official "grand opening" of the soccer mini-pitch at the Petworth Recreation Center (8th & Taylor Sts NW) on Monday, August 6th at 2pm.

DC SCORES and the DPR soccer camp will be putting on an exhibition game, with some DC United players acting as referees and coaches. (If you have a child that wants to play, DPR will ask you to sign a waiver.)

DPR's press release states that this "new multi-sport play space will increase access to soccer for more DC children and families and lighting at the pitch will ensure that the entire community can use the play space past daylight hours. This mini-pitch was funded by Musco Sports Lighting in honor of the opening the Audi Field last month in partnership with the U.S. Soccer Foundation."

DPR explains futsal as "a derivative of soccer, and is played with two, five-player teams. The sport is played on a basketball-style court, with a smaller, low-bouncing ball. Like soccer, the objective is to score goals!"

Not sure why this opening is on a Monday afternoon, but if you can make it, should be neat.
