MPD responds to resident concerns, steps up bike patrols
/I heard from Lt Anthony Washington that MPD is planning to add a new mountain bike patrol in the area as a response to resident concerns and crime trends. They are adding an additional mountain bike patrol in the area around the Georgia Ave / Petworth Metro and the 4800 – 4900 blocks of 2nd and 3rd Streets NW. This is in addition to current mountain bike patrol officers Chris Glascock and Eric Frost, who do an outstanding job and are very outgoing.
According to Lt. Washington, the new bike patrol officer will be assigned from 2:30pm until 5pm, responsible for the areas of Rock Creek Church Road NW to Randolph Street NW, Georgia Avenue NW (eastside) to 8th Street NW, with an emphasis on public order maintenance in and around the Petworth Metro station. (There have been a rash of robberies from pedestrians coming from the Metro in the evening hours as people are coming home. The suspects are usually teens who steal a phone or a bag and run to the Metro.)
Then from 5pm until the end of the shift, the bike patrol officer will be responsible for the areas of 4th Street NW to 1st Street NW, Decatur Street NW to Gallatin Street NW, with an emphasis on the 4800 – 4900 blocks of 2nd and 3rd Streets NW, as well as the 5000 block of New Hampshire Avenue NW (New Hampshire Avenue Market parking lot).
