Sandovan's on Georgia Avenue to close

Sandovan’s owners Donovan and Sandra

Sandovan’s Restaurant and Lounge has been an unwavering presence at 4809 Georgia Avenue NW for the past decade, serving as a cherished oasis in the Petworth community. However, the end of an era is on the horizon as the doors of this beloved establishment are set to close at the end of the month. The reasons behind this decision are multifaceted.

For a considerable amount of time, the owners Donovan and Sandra found themselves going back and forth with their landlord. The bone of contention centered around leasing the entire building rather than just the lower level where their restaurant thrived. On top of that, the possibility of rent increases added fuel to the already flickering flames of uncertainty.

This uncertainty loomed over Sandovan’s, leaving its future hanging by a thread.

Amidst the announcement of the restaurant's impending closure, an outpouring of support from local community officials and residents erupted. Their collective voices shared a resolute desire to explore any avenue that could possibly avert the shuttering of the only sit-down Jamaican-American culinary haven in the heart of Washington, DC. Nevertheless, it wasn't solely the troubles with the landlord that sealed Sandovan’s fate; it was also the results of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Donovan candidly shared his struggles despite the lease disputes, admitting that they have been fighting an uphill battle since the onset of the global health crisis. The tide of the pandemic had swept away the steady stream of patrons that once filled the tables of Sandovan’s, leaving a negative impact on its financial viability.

In speaking with Donovan and Sandra, their affection for the Petworth community shines like a beacon of goodwill. They shared a message of sincerity, saying, "We always wish our customers, vendors and the Petworth Community eternal blessings and thank you for each and every one of the ten years, but it is time to move on."

As Sandovan’s prepares for its closing, the memories forged within its walls will endure, leaving an indelible mark on the Petworth community. They are receiving well-wishes and calls from customers asking if they can have their popular Jerk Pasta recipe everyone has fallen in love with. The love and support surrounding this cherished establishment will always be remembered by those who dined, celebrated and found a great environment within its walls. While the closure of Sandovan’s may signify the end of an era, the spirit it fostered in its customers will undoubtedly live on.
