Come support kids expressing themselves with DC SCORES Poetry Slam
/ DrewDC SCORES is a very cool non-profit that provides an after-school program to elementary and middle school children, teaching them soccer, community service and poetry. What they're really teaching is kids teamwork, respect and confidence to achieve their goals.
Each year DC SCORES puts on a Poetry Slam where the kids share poems they're written, on topics they care about. It includes students from local schools Powell and Truesdell.
"The event is always inspiring," Jake Lloyd, communications manager for DC SCORES said to me. "This year with the election result we're expecting kids' poems to be even more emotional -- expressing their fears, their anxieties, their lives. I don't think there's a better event showcasing DC youth speaking out about their situations than the Slam!"

It's #GivingTuesday, and DC SCORES is asking for your support. This worthy non-profit teaches middle-school DC students physical and emotional strength through soccer and poetry. May sound like an odd combo, but soccer teaches teamwork and leadership, while poetry helps students understand who they are, and learn to express themselves.
This year, you can help the only middle-school soccer league in DC by donating to DC SCORES.
DC SCORES continues its poetry work at Powell Elementary. In a recent post on the DC SCORES blog, Perspectives from Powell, Part II: Pumpkins and personifications, writing coordinator Mira Smith talks about visiting poet Gowri Koneswaran, from the American Poetry Museum, who led a poetry workshop for the Powell students, teaching personification and word play to express feelings and ideas through inanimate objects.

I attended a breakfast meeting this morning for DC SCORES, and it was really moving — and it made me further grateful to be partnering with this organization. A couple of hundred supports gathered downtown to network and meet two young, smart kids who have seen personal successes participating with the non-profit.
