Petworth Playground renovations still planned, just delayed

DPR project manager Peter Nohrden presents the results of the Petworth Park renovation survey at a community meeting.

The playground at the Petworth Recreation Center has been scheduled for renovations since the budget passed in October 2017. The last meeting held by the Department of Parks and Recreation was in May 2018 to review the results of a residents’ survey DPR conducted. So where are we now?

According to Peter Nohrden from DPR, it’s been a slower than anticipated process in hiring the design/builder for the renovation.

Friends of Petworth Park president Sarah Gabriel said, “The Request for Proposal was released and a pre-bid site visit was held [the week of December 7th]. All bids will be in this month and the hope is to have a contractor hired in early 2019. At that time a community meeting will be set up to meet the designers and design the park.”

“We do anticipate to proceed through the design process this spring and into the summer with final designs and permits,” Nohrden said. “We will look forward to hosting several design review meetings during this time to gather community feedback. With this projection, we should be ready to begin construction in the fall of 2019 and complete the park renovations by next winter. There have been no other changes to the budget or scope of work.”

The park did manage to get a futsal court installed, unbeknownst to residents, back in July 2018.

More updates as they become available next year.
