Petworth Dance is excited to present another season of FREE outdoor performances on August 5th at 8pm at the Petworth Park (8th and Taylor Streets NW).
As summer approaches (and it is, sooner than we think!), the next season of the Petworth Dance Project is getting organized. Founded in 2015, the Dance series is a complex and expensive program, as it involved professional dance troupes and choreographers from the top studios and companies in the DMV.

Petworth resident Sara Herrera is offering specially themed dance classes for the beginner and the dance diva, set up similar to Zumba, where choreography will be repeated with each song, so plenty of time to master the moves. The next class is Friday, December 18th at 7:30pm at Crossfit Petworth.

Her solution is a dance class series for all levels to enjoy. And while you dance and enjoy, you also get to help fund the 2016 season. Pretty cool. And it starts this Friday, Nov 20th at 7:30pm.

Read MoreThe final Petworth Jazz Project of the 2015 season was Saturday, September 26th. This time it was a combo event with the Petworth Dance Project, giving Petworth's newest cultural program some much needed exposure.
As I've said before, these two shows are really stand-out events that help make Petworth a wonderful neighborhood. See the full (and quite large) photo gallery, after the break.

It's also a combo show with the Petworth Dance Project, which was rained out a couple of weeks back. Between Baba Ras D for the kids (and c'mon, you like him too), Dance, Jazz and some tasty Timber Pizza, Petworth Park is going to be THE place to be on Saturday night, September 26th.

I'll post more about the final Jazz Project show of the season as we get closer to it.
The Petworth Dance Project is one of the best gems in the Petworth cultural crown, and the last performance for this summer is this Saturday, September 12th. (Read my first article about the Dance Project and what it means to live in a neighborhood.)
This wonderful event has drawn a small but dedicated crowd that grows each performance. It would be great to give them a big send-off for the last show of the season. So bring a picnic meal and some drinks and enjoy a great experience.

Read MoreThe fourth Petworth Dance Project is set for this Saturday, August 8th at the Petworth Park (8th & Taylor St NW). There's a special kids' dance class at 6:30, and then the first dance starts after that.
Saturday's dance project should be special, as one of the companies performing is Aras Dance, led by Sara Herrera-Kopetchny, who runs the Petworth Dance Project. Also performing is Coyaba Dance Theater.
Timber Pizza Co. will have their mobile brick oven on-site for fresh pizza -- 10% of the proceeds go to support the Petworth Dance Project, so come hungry for culture and mozzarella and basil!
In an effort to continue to help raise funds for the Petworth Dance Project, Sara Herrera-Kopetchny will be teaching a dance class on Friday night. If you have ever wanted to try contemporary dance, here's your chance to learn. More info.

The Petworth Dance Project third performance was on Saturday, July 11th at Petworth Park (8th and Taylor St NW). This time was a bit unusual, even for Petworth, as the first performance was in the spray park. And it was a cool experience.
"It's all about community," Sara said after the show with a big smile. "It's great to be able to do this in Petworth."

According to Dance Project organizer Sara Herrera-Kopetchny, the timeline for Saturday's (July 11th) activities featuring Light Switch Dance Theatre will be 7-7:30pm performance in the spray park, followed by Rainbow Joe doing a drum and dance party for kids from 7:30-8pm. Then the Light Switch Dance Theatre begins the second half of the show at 8:05pm.
I highly recommend coming to the Petworth Dance Project. It's a wonderful addition to our cultural activities in Petworth. (Here's my previous article about the Dance Project.)
"This is the first site specific performance of the season, with the first half of the show performed in the Petworth Spray Park. You do not want to miss this beautiful and thought-provoking performance," said Sara.

"I hope you will join us for this performance! It's outdoors! It's FREE! It's dance! What's not to love!"
It might sound obvious, but sometimes the obvious is so much in front of you that you don't see it. Last night at the Petworth Dance Project, I realized that a neighborhood changes from just a place to live to a place where you want to live when the people around you work to make it a real community. It's where you feel engaged and connected with a sense of belonging.
It's when people volunteer their time to clean up streets and plant new flowers, when local businesses open their doors to local events, and when neighbors bring their passion and make their work available to all. We see this right here in Petworth with the Celebrate Petworth Festival, with the Petworth Jazz Project, the Community Market, the three Social hours happening around the area -- and now the Petworth Dance Project.
Sara Herrera-Kopetchny has put together a new summertime event for people of all ages to enjoy modern dance, for free, here in Petworth. The second Saturday of each month, a dance company will come to Petworth Park (8th & Taylor St NW) and present a free dance for everyone to enjoy.
